Welcome to the 2009-2010 School Year!

November 3, 2009 Permanent Improvement Renewal Levy

The Piqua City Board of Education has placed a permanent improvement renewal levy request on the November 3rd 2009 ballot.   The renewal levy will not bring additional dollars to the district; it will maintain the current funding levels.  This is not a new or additional tax.  Funds from this levy are used for maintenance and capital improvement projects which have a life of five-years or more.  This includes building upkeep such as roofs, boilers, floors, plumbing, brickwork, sidewalks, security equipment, parking lot resurfacing, and bus purchases.  Like any home owner we need to set aside dollars to maintain our facilities.  The permanent improvement fund is our set aside dollars for these maintenance expenses, both expected and unexpected.

The renewal levy is a five year levy which was originally passed by Piqua voters in 1994 and expires December 31, 2009.   Since June 2007 more than $2.60 million has been cut from the school budgets, with many cost saving measures in place and 38 people not replaced or laid off.  The Board of Education will need to cut an additional $774,883 from the operating budget if the November 3rd permanent improvement renewal levy fails.  Piqua City Schools has been recognized again as one of Ohio's "Excellent" rated districts.  This renewal levy will help maintain our existing facilities which house current programs, services and opportunities for the children of Piqua.
